Support DC Home Rule

Write Postcards for Elissa Silverman

Monday October 29

We WIll write postcards to GOTV for Elissa Silverman for DC CIty Council on Monday, October 29. RSVP for either time:

2:00 - 4:00 p.m. (Cleveland Park, The Broadmoor)

6:00 - 8:00 p.m. 6:00-8:00 PM  (Chevy Chase, DC)

We’ve all been laser-focused on turning competitive races blue in states near and far, but never forgetting our own DC Council race.  If you’re committed to retaining Elissa Silverman – fierce independent and guardian of taxpayers’ money, who owes nothing to special interests – as one of our At-Large Council members, then please volunteer to help her campaign* in these remaining 11 days.

NOPE will hold a GOTV postcard-writing party for Elissa on Monday, October 29. Postcard-writers will complete 20 cards on-site (@ $8/ to cover costs), so we can mail them the next day. If you prefer to pick up a batch of cards to write at home and mail yourself, it’s crucial to mail them Tuesday or no later than Wednesday – cards may convince recipients to vote early, which is possible prior to 7 pm Friday Nov 2, or on Election Day.

We’ll have the postcards, pens, sample message(s), even some decorative materials, as well as some light refreshments to keep up our energies – all we need is your RSVP by this Saturday to help us plan for adequate numbers of cards, etc.

Please RSVP by Saturday to bettyhawks@gmail.com for the time period you want to attend on Monday, October 29. (Please include your name, email address, and phone number.) You’ll receive an email confirmation with the address.

See you on Monday, Oct. 29!!

Send a Birthday Greeting to Jason Chaffetz

Americans for Self Rule is organizing a birthday present for Chaffetz's 50th on March 26. Here's their idea:

They created a Thunderclap to spread their message across social media. For those of you who are new to Thunderclap, it's pretty simple: (1) sign up here, (2) add your Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or all three accounts, and (3) on March 26th at 12pm, the following message will blast from the social media accounts of everyone participating:

"Happy 50th from the 51st State, Jason Chaffetz! Serve your district, not the District of Columbia #HandsOffDC #utpol http://thndr.me/YPYCV0"

The goal is simple: to spread our message and get us trending. Feel free to tailor the post -- and please spread the word!

Action Agenda: Fight for DC Home Rule

The Issues:

  1. Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight Committee and Government Reform Committee, is on the warpath to reverse D.C. laws and voter-approved initiatives. This includes DC's Sanctuary City status, the new death with dignity law, and abortion rights, school voucher, and gun laws.
  2. Jason Chaffetz is up for reelection in 2018.
  3. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Chairman Phil Mendelson, and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced a petition to Congress for DC Statehood. We are far from achieving DC Statehood but it is the ultimate way to stop Congressional meddling in local affairs.

Potential Actions:

  1. Keep close watch on what Chaffetz and his committee are doing. We need to let him know it is not okay to interfere with DC home rule, and to be ready to mobilize whenever he, his committee, or other MoCs raise these issues. For example, we can:
    • Keep tabs on DC issues and take immediate action as needed (send emails, post on FB, ask friends and relatives to write their MoC, advertise and attend rallies).
    • Join HandsOffDC (https://www.facebook.com/groups/handsoffdc/).
    • Ask a HandsOFFDC representative to come to a NOPE meeting and discuss how we can get involved.
    • Attend the upcoming HandsOFFDC training session on Monday, March 27 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Northeast Branch Library at 7th St NE and Maryland Ave NE. RSVP at the Facebook Event  (http://www.charlesallenward6.com/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fevents%2F1632004227105963%2F&e=5090c2caf3c57173c12aa9fbfd5a0fd1&utm_source=charlesallendc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=17_228_handsoff&n=3)
    • Check for future HandsOFFDC trainings. Next up will be a session on how to write letters to the editors and op-eds in local newspapers, including how to target local newspapers in pivotal congressional districts.
    • Call Speaker Paul Ryan and ask him to stand with the 680,000 residents of the District and support our right to control our local affairs. Ask your friends and relatives to do the same (202-225-3031; http://www.speaker.gov/contact)
  2. Work to beat Chaffetz in his 2018 Congressional race.
    • Join Americans for Self-Rule PAC http://www.americansforselfrule.org
      • Sign up to receive updates
      • Volunteer
      • Offer support in researching the candidates who will likely be opposing Chaffetz - Damien Kidd and Evan McMullin
      • Donate money to the PAC to put pressure on Chaffetz and his allies
      • Ask your friends and relatives in Utah to call Chaffetz’s office.
  3. Fight for DC to become the 51st state.
    • Yes, we know there is NO WAY DC will become a state during the next four years! But if we keep the pressure on Congress, it can only help us win in the long run.
    • Follow Mayor Bower’s actions, work with HandsOFFDC statehood group, keep an eye out for DC statehood rallies

Resources:

Americans for Self-Rule PAC: Started by DC residents (including one woman - Lynette Craig -  initially from Utah) working to protect the residents of Washington, DC from federal overreach.

HandsOFFDC: Facebook page and Charles Allen, the Ward 6 Council Member who is heading this group

DC Values Playbook: Created by the DC mayor’s office, this document describes the ways the federal government can interfere with DC affairs through the legislative and budgetary processes.

#HandsOFFDC

Charles Allen, Ward 6 City Councilman, has organized a group called #HandsOFFDC to tell Representative Jason Chaffetz (House Oversight and Government Reform Committee) not to veto our DC laws (e.g., Death with Dignity, abortion rights, gun control, Sanctuary City status). Here are five actions you can take:

  • Post on social media why Congress should keep #HandsOff DC.
  • Put a sign in your home or business to remind Congress to keep #HandsOff DC.
  • Call Congressman Jason Chaffetz and tell him to keep #HandsOff DC: DC office: 202-225-7751. Utah office: 801-851-2500.
  • Write an op/ed in a local paper of a member of Congress. Pick one!
  • Write a letter to any member on the House Oversight and Government Report Committee.
  • Download the list of actions and share it with your friends and relatives.

For more information, go to the #HandsOff DC FaceBook page.

Support DC Home Rule

Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight Committee and Government Affairs Committee, is already on the warpath to reverse D.C. laws and voter-approved ballots (or maybe to annex DC to Montgomery County??). This includes DC's Sanctuary City status, our new death with dignity law, and our abortion rights and gun laws.

Make phone calls, starting now:

Call Chaffetz's DC office (202-225-7751) and the Committee office (202-225-5074).

Sample script: "My name is ____, I live in DC, and I did not elect Congressman Chaffetz to interfere in our local affairs. He should stop bullying DC residents and acting like a Congressional overseer. 86% of DC residents voted for statehood last year, and we're not going to settle for anything less.

If Twitter is an option, please start tweeting now. Here's a sample tweet: @jasoninthehouse Stop interfering with DC laws, we didn't elect you to be our overseer @sltrib @thomaswburr @KRCLradio @#dcstatehood (Note: by including local UT media, we hope to amplify our voice.)
